General Information

Where is the library located?
The library is located on the corner of Church and Court Streets in downtown Cortland.  The mailing address is 32 Church Street, Cortland, NY  13045. The library has two entrances: the main entrance on Church Street opens to Adult Services; the Court Street entrance accesses both Youth Services and the elevator for the main floor and the lower level for Youth Services and Community room / Periodicals room.

Does the library have an elevator?
Yes, our elevator is accessible via the Court Street entrance to the building. The elevator opens at Adult Services on the main floor and  Youth Services and the Community / Periodicals room on the Lower Level.

Does the library have a parking lot?
Yes, the library’s parking lot is located on the Church Street side of the building.  Additional street parking is available on Court Street outside the entrance to Youth Services (2 hour limit).

Why is the library’s outdoor book return locked?
The library has an external book return located outside the Court Street entrance to the building.  Patrons may use the outdoor book return when the library is CLOSED. During business hours, we keep the book return locked and request that patrons return items inside the building.

Is the library closed on holidays?
The library will be closed in observance of the following holidays:

Library Services

Does the library have a photocopier?
Yes, the library has a photocopier.  Cost to copy varies:  $0.25 per black/white 8 1/2 " x 11" page;  $1.00 per color 8 1/2" x 11"

Does the library have a fax machine?
No, the library does not have a public fax machine.

Does the library have a scanner?
Yes, the library has a scanner available in our computer lab.  Our copier can also scan and save to a USB drive.  We can also assist you with scanning your old slides to an electronic format.  Please call ahead to make sure a staff person is available to assist you.

Does the library have a typewriter?
Yes, the library has a typewriter for public use.  Visit the circulation desk for more information.

Does the library have a microfilm machine?
Yes, the library has two microfilm machines—both of which are connected to a printer.  Print-outs cost $0.25 per black/white page. 

Does the library have a local history section?
Yes, the library has a local history section.  The local history print collection includes Cortland City Directories, CoHiAn Yearbooks (Cortland Sr.-Jr. High School), Per Annos Yearbooks (St. Mary’s School), information about the Chester Gillette murder trial, and more.  The local history microfilm collection includes issues of The Cortland Standard and other local newspapers dating back to 1831 including The Cortland Republican, The Cortland Tribune, The Cortland Whig, The Homer Independent, The Homer Republican, The Gazette and Banner, and The Independent Villager.   Items from these collections do not circulate—they must be viewed in the library.

Does the library accept research requests from people residing outside the area?
Yes, for $15 per hour/any part of an hour a library staff member will search back issues of local newspapers for obituaries, wedding announcements, etc.  Because these newspapers are not indexed, providing the month and year in which the event occurred will expedite the search. Please call the library for more information.

Does the library carry tax forms?
Yes, during tax season the library provides most Federal and New York State tax forms.  The forms are located on the main floor of the library in Adult Services.  Please remember that library staff members are unable to answer your tax-related questions.  Federal tax forms are also available online from the IRS.  New York State tax forms are available online from the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.

Does the library have a meeting room?
The library does not have a closed-door meeting room; however, we do have spaces for small groups to gather.  Please call the library for more information (607-753-1042). Please review the meeting room policy at http://cortlandfreelibrary.org/about/policies/

Are there used books for sale at the library?
The library has 2 book sales each year coinciding with the Pumpkinfest in the fall and the Arts and Wine Festival in the summer. The library has a free book shelf where some donated used books are passed on to other readers. Adult free books are available year-round in the vestibule at the Church Street entrance and youth titles are located on a shelf near the Court Street entrance. 

Does the library accept book donations?
Yes, the library accepts a limited number of donations (no more than one or two boxes at a time, please) due to lack of storage space. We ask that all donations be clean and odor-free.  We do not accept Reader’s Digest condensed books, magazines (including National Geographic), textbooks, medical books, computer-related books, encyclopedias, dictionaries (pre-2000) or books containing other time sensitive information.  Items not added to the library collection will be sold in book sales or put on our free book shelf.

Does the library offer any special services for the homebound and/or visually impaired?
Homebound and/or visually impaired individuals residing in Cortland may apply for the Cortland Free Library’s Mail-It Service.  To request an application for this service, please contact the library at 607-753-1042.

Does the library have a community bulletin board?
Yes, the library has a community bulletin board.  All material must be approved by the Library Director and posted by library staff.  Only non-profit organizations and public-service events will be posted.  Nothing of a commercial nature will be allowed.  There is an additional bulletin board outside our Youth Services area for items of interest to children and caregivers.
