SUMMARY:Community Read Book Discussion: "The Good Life" with the Mental Health Association (MHA) of Cortland County
DESCRIPTION:Pick up a free copy of The Good Life: Lessons From the World’s Longest Scientific Study of Happiness\, by Robert Waldinger and Marc Shulz at Cortland Free Library\, then join us for this in-person discussion with our partner MHA. \nAbout the Book: \nNew York Times Bestseller \nWhat makes for a happy life\, a fulfilling life? A good life? According to the directors of the Harvard Study of Adult Development\, the longest scientific study of happiness ever conducted\, the answer to these questions may be closer than you realize. \nWhat makes a life fulfilling and meaningful? The simple but surprising answer is: relationships. The stronger our relationships\, the more likely we are to live happy\, satisfying\, and overall healthier lives. In fact\, the Harvard Study of Adult Development reveals that the strength of our connections with others can predict the health of both our bodies and our brains as we go through life. \nThe invaluable insights in this book emerge from the revealing personal stories of hundreds of participants in the Harvard Study as they were followed year after year for their entire adult lives\, and this wisdom is bolstered by research findings from this and many other studies. Relationships in all their forms—friendships\, romantic partnerships\, families\, coworkers\, tennis partners\, book club members\, Bible study groups—all contribute to a happier\, healthier life. And as The Good Life shows us\, it’s never too late to strengthen the relationships you have\, and never too late to build new ones. \nDr. Waldinger’s TED Talk about the Harvard Study\, “What Makes a Good Life\,” has been viewed more than 42 million times and is one of the ten most-watched TED talks ever. The Good Life has been praised by bestselling authors Jay Shetty (“Robert Waldinger and Marc Schulz lead us on an empowering quest towards our greatest need: meaningful human connection”)\, Angela Duckworth (“In a crowded field of life advice and even life advice based on scientific research\, Schulz and Waldinger stand apart”)\, and happiness expert Laurie Santos (“Waldinger and Schulz are world experts on the counterintuitive things that make life meaningful”). \nWith warmth\, wisdom\, and compelling life stories\, The Good Life shows us how we can make our lives happier and more meaningful through our connections to others. \n  \nAbout the Authors: \n \nRobert Waldinger: Director\, Harvard Study of Adult Development\, Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital \nRobert Waldinger is Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School\, director of the Harvard Study of Adult Development at Massachusetts General Hospital\, and cofounder of the Lifespan Research Foundation. Dr. Waldinger received his AB from Harvard College and his MD from Harvard Medical School. He is a practicing psychiatrist and psychoanalyst\, and he directs a psychotherapy teaching program for Harvard psychiatry residents. He is also a Zen master (Roshi) and teaches meditation in New England and around the world. \n  \n\nMarc Schulz:  Associate Director\, Harvard Study of Adult Development and Sue Kardas PhD 1971 Chair in Psychology at Bryn Mawr College \nMarc Schulz is the associate director of the Harvard Study of Adult Development Harvard Study of Adult Development and the Sue Kardas PhD 1971 Chair in Psychology at Bryn Mawr College. He also directs the Data Science Program and previously chaired the psychology department and Clinical Developmental Psychology PhD program at Bryn Mawr. SUMMARY:Reception: "Behind the Wall: Art and Writing from Prison" (Story House Ithaca Traveling Exhibit)
DESCRIPTION:Join us along with Gary Fine\, director of the Durland Alternatives Library and Prisoner Express\, and Treacy Ziegler\, exhibit curator\, for this special reception and celebration of the last stop on this traveling exhibit’s tour. \n“Behind the Wall” is a traveling exhibition of drawings\, paintings\, letters\, stories\, and poems created by people in prison. It provides a window into the lives and imaginations of incarcerated people in our communities and beyond. \nNearly 2 million Americans live in jails\, prisons\, and detention centers\, all but invisible to the rest of the world. Many struggle with isolation\, loneliness\, and a lack of a sense of purpose. Creative self-expression helps them process their experiences\, build their skills\, and communicate their thoughts and feelings with others. Yet little of what they produce reaches people on the outside. \nThe artworks and writings in “Behind the Wall” have been collected by Prisoner Express\, an Ithaca-based nonprofit that uses newsletters\, book exchanges\, and art and creative writing programs to foster hope and a sense of community among incarcerated people around the country. Prisoner Express currently serves more than 4\,000 prisoners and has reached more than 37\,000 over the last 20 years. \n“Behind the Wall” is curated by Ithaca artist Treacy Ziegler. It is coordinated by Story House Ithaca in collaboration with the Finger Lakes Library System and supported by an action grant from Humanities NY. \nStory House Ithaca is a community organization devoted to bringing people together around stories. Prisoner Express and Story House Ithaca are both projects of the nonprofit Center for Transformative Action.

SUMMARY:You Can Teach an Old Dog New Tricks: Going Vegan Later in Life\, a Talk with Eric Lindstrom (The Skeptical Vegan) sponsored by BRIX!
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk by Eric Lindstrom and vegan treats by Brix! \nEveryone who attends will also get the chance to win a copy of The Skeptical Vegan. \nRegistration recommended but not required. \nGrowing up in an all-female Italian household\, Eric was nourished to obesity on meat and dairy. Decades later\, overnight\, Lindstrom became a vegan—on a bet. A bet he still refuses to lose ten years later. This simple change in diet and lifestyle led to a popular blog that led to two book deals\, two YouTube shows and\, ultimately\, a career in animal rights. Eric’s talk inspires anyone\, at any age\, to make the change to vegan—for human health\, the planet\, and the animals. \n\nAbout Eric Lindstrom: \nIn his role as Executive Director\, Lindstrom manages Farm Animal Rights Movement (FARM)’s personnel\, fundraising\, coordinating partner  networks\, budgeting\, and operations. \nAfter founding a New York-based vegan/socially-conscious advertising and marketing firm\, Lindstrom officially started his career in the animal rights movement as the Program Director for Farm Animal Rights Movement (2016-2018) and then served as the Director of Marketing and Communications for Animal Outlook (formerly Compassion Over Killing) where he led the team toward a successful rebranding of the decades-old organization. \nResiding in Ithaca\, NY\, Lindstrom penned two best-selling books on veganism\, The Skeptical Vegan and Raising Vegan Kids (Skyhorse Publishing).
