SUMMARY:Community Read Book Discussion: "A Place Called Home" w/ CAPCO\, Cortland LGBTQ Center\, and Hillside
DESCRIPTION:Pick up a free copy of A Place Called Home: A Memoir\, by David Ambroz at Cortland Free Library\, then join us for this in-person discussion on Saturday\, April 29 with our community partners\, Cortland LGBTQ Center\, CAPCO\, and Hillside/Cortland County Foster Parent Training/Recruiting. \nAbout the Book: \nAs a child\, David Ambroz was raised homeless in New York City\, the home of Wall Street and more than 100\,000 homeless children. For David and his two siblings\, their mother’s diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia sets them in motion for a life of poverty\, violence and instability as they travel across New York and New England seeking shelter. For eleven years\, home for David means living in train stations\, subway cars\, 24-hour diners\, and wherever is safe and warm; bathing in public restrooms; and stealing food to quell his hunger. \nWhen he gets into foster care\, it feels like salvation\, but it soon proves to be just as unsafe for young people–more of his foster siblings are put on a prison pipeline than college-bound. Surmounting violence\, continued poverty and physical and emotional abuse at the hands of his caregivers\, David harnesses an inner grit to escape the inevitable outcome for kids like him. He takes shelter and finds hope on his own in libraries\, schools\, and in the occasional adult angel. Through hard work and unwavering resolve\, he is able to get into Vassar College\, the first significant step out from the yolk of poverty\, and later graduates UCLA School of Law. \nThis heart-wrenching and inspiring story about young people pulls back the curtain on homelessness and poverty in the lives of children and shines a pivotal light on generations of kids that have been systematically ignored and overlooked. A Place Called Home is both David’s powerful personal account through the lens of a child surviving it daily. And as the go-to child welfare advocate for the Obama administration and major U.S. companies\, A Place Called Home is a beckoning call to our national conscience to move from pity to action.

SUMMARY:Community Read Book Discussion: "The Good Life" with the Mental Health Association (MHA) of Cortland County
DESCRIPTION:Pick up a free copy of The Good Life: Lessons From the World’s Longest Scientific Study of Happiness\, by Robert Waldinger and Marc Shulz at Cortland Free Library\, then join us for this in-person discussion with our partner MHA. \nAbout the Book: \nNew York Times Bestseller \nWhat makes for a happy life\, a fulfilling life? A good life? According to the directors of the Harvard Study of Adult Development\, the longest scientific study of happiness ever conducted\, the answer to these questions may be closer than you realize. \nWhat makes a life fulfilling and meaningful? The simple but surprising answer is: relationships. The stronger our relationships\, the more likely we are to live happy\, satisfying\, and overall healthier lives. In fact\, the Harvard Study of Adult Development reveals that the strength of our connections with others can predict the health of both our bodies and our brains as we go through life. \nThe invaluable insights in this book emerge from the revealing personal stories of hundreds of participants in the Harvard Study as they were followed year after year for their entire adult lives\, and this wisdom is bolstered by research findings from this and many other studies. Relationships in all their forms—friendships\, romantic partnerships\, families\, coworkers\, tennis partners\, book club members\, Bible study groups—all contribute to a happier\, healthier life. And as The Good Life shows us\, it’s never too late to strengthen the relationships you have\, and never too late to build new ones. \nDr. Waldinger’s TED Talk about the Harvard Study\, “What Makes a Good Life\,” has been viewed more than 42 million times and is one of the ten most-watched TED talks ever. The Good Life has been praised by bestselling authors Jay Shetty (“Robert Waldinger and Marc Schulz lead us on an empowering quest towards our greatest need: meaningful human connection”)\, Angela Duckworth (“In a crowded field of life advice and even life advice based on scientific research\, Schulz and Waldinger stand apart”)\, and happiness expert Laurie Santos (“Waldinger and Schulz are world experts on the counterintuitive things that make life meaningful”). \nWith warmth\, wisdom\, and compelling life stories\, The Good Life shows us how we can make our lives happier and more meaningful through our connections to others. \n  \nAbout the Authors: \n \nRobert Waldinger: Director\, Harvard Study of Adult Development\, Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital \nRobert Waldinger is Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School\, director of the Harvard Study of Adult Development at Massachusetts General Hospital\, and cofounder of the Lifespan Research Foundation. Dr. Waldinger received his AB from Harvard College and his MD from Harvard Medical School. He is a practicing psychiatrist and psychoanalyst\, and he directs a psychotherapy teaching program for Harvard psychiatry residents. He is also a Zen master (Roshi) and teaches meditation in New England and around the world. \n  \n\nMarc Schulz:  Associate Director\, Harvard Study of Adult Development and Sue Kardas PhD 1971 Chair in Psychology at Bryn Mawr College \nMarc Schulz is the associate director of the Harvard Study of Adult Development Harvard Study of Adult Development and the Sue Kardas PhD 1971 Chair in Psychology at Bryn Mawr College. He also directs the Data Science Program and previously chaired the psychology department and Clinical Developmental Psychology PhD program at Bryn Mawr. SUMMARY:Community Read Book Discussion: Disability Visibility with Access to Independence\, Racker\, CACTC\, and the Cortland County Mental Health Department
DESCRIPTION:Pick up a free copy of Disability Visibility: First-Person Stories from the 21st Century\, edited by Alice Wong at Cortland Free Library\, then join us for this in-person book discussion with our partners Access to Independence\, Racker\, Cortland Area Communities That Care (CACTC)\, and the Cortland County Mental Health Department. \nOther ways to read the book: \n\nAudiobook\neBook\nPlain-language summary by Sara Luterman (more about the plain-language version)\nLibrary of Congress’ Braille and Audio Reading Download program (downloadable talking book #DB99604 and Braille currently in process of being added)\n\n  \nAbout the Book: \nA groundbreaking collection of first-person writing on the joys and challenges of the modern disability experience\, Disability Visibility brings together the voices of activists\, authors\, lawyers\, politicians\, artists\, and everyday people whose daily lives are\, in the words of playwright Neil Marcus\, “an art . . . an ingenious way to live.” \nAccording to the last census\, one in five people in the United States lives with a disability. Some are visible\, some are hidden–but all are underrepresented in media and popular culture. Now\, just in time for the thirtieth anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act\, activist Alice Wong brings together an urgent\, galvanizing collection of personal essays by contemporary disabled writers. There is Harriet McBryde Johnson’s “Unspeakable Conversations\,” which describes her famous debate with Princeton philosopher Peter Singer over her own personhood. There is columnist s. e. smith’s celebratory review of a work of theater by disabled performers. There are original pieces by up-and-coming authors like Keah Brown and Haben Girma. There are blog posts\, manifestos\, eulogies\, and testimonies to Congress. \nTaken together\, this anthology gives a glimpse of the vast richness and complexity of the disabled experience\, highlighting the passions\, talents\, and everyday lives of this community. It invites readers to question their own assumptions and understandings. It celebrates and documents disability culture in the now. It looks to the future and past with hope and love. – Provided by publisher \n  \nAbout the Author: \n \nAlice Wong (she/her) is a disabled activist\, writer\, media maker\, and consultant. She is the founder and director of the Disability Visibility Project\, an online community dedicated to creating\, sharing\, and amplifying disability media and culture. Alice is the editor of Disability Visibility: First-Person Stories from the Twenty-First Century\, an anthology of essays by disabled people and Disability Visibility: 17 First-Person Stories for Today\, an adapted version for young adults. Her debut memoir\, Year of the Tiger: An Activist’s Life is available now from Vintage Books. Disability Intimacy\, her next anthology\, will be out in 2024. Twitter: @SFdirewolf.
