SUMMARY:Community Read Book Discussion: "This Is All I Got: A New Mother's Search for Home\," by Lauren Sandler
DESCRIPTION:Join Cortland Free Library in partnership with Catholic Charities and the Wishing Wellness Center in person to discuss This Is All I Got: A New Mother’s Search for Home\, by Lauren Sandler. Refreshments provided. Registration recommended but not required. \nAbout the Book\nEvery day\, more than forty-five million Americans attempt to survive below the poverty line. Every night\, nearly sixty thousand people sleep in New York City-run shelters\, 40 percent of them children. In This Is All I Got\, Sandler brings this deeply personal issue to life\, vividly depicting one woman’s hope and despair and her steadfast determination to change her life despite the myriad setbacks she encounters. \nThis Is All I Got is a rare feat of reporting and a dramatic story of survival. Sandler’s candid and revealing account also exposes the murky boundaries between a journalist and her subject when it becomes impossible to remain a dispassionate observer. She has written a powerful and unforgettable indictment of a system that is often indifferent to the needs of those it serves\, and that sometimes seems designed to fail. \nhttps://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/547943/this-is-all-i-got-by-lauren-sandler/ \n  \n  \n\n\n\nPhoto: © Justin Lane \n\n\n\nAbout the Author\n\nLauren Sandler is an award-winning journalist. She is the bestselling author of One and Only: The Freedom of Having an Only Child\, and the Joy of Being Oneand Righteous: Dispatches from the Evangelical Youth Movement. Her essays and features have appeared in dozens of publications including Time\, The New York Times\, Slate\, The Atlantic\, The Nation\, The New Republic\, The Guardian\, and New York. Sandler has led the OpEd Project’s Public Voices Fellowships at Yale\, Columbia\, and Dartmouth\, and has taught in the graduate journalism program at NYU\, where she has also been a visiting scholar. She was Poynter Fellow at Yale and a fellow at MacDowell.\nhttps://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/authors/238801/lauren-sandler/ \n\n\n  \nThis Community Read is funded by the American Rescue Plan: Humanities Grants for Libraries\, an initiative of the American Library Association (ALA) made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

SUMMARY:Intro to Yoga
DESCRIPTION:Learn what yoga is\, what the benefits are\, and how to integrate it into daily life-even if you never roll out a yoga mat. Participants will hear an overview of the 8-Limbs of Ashtanga Yoga and will get the opportunity to briefly practice each. Wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat or a towel to sit on. Chairs will be provided if preferred. No prior experience necessary. Open to ages 13 and up. Registration required. \nFrom Instructor Jessica Cute: \nI was not a fan of yoga the first few times I tried it. After becoming desperate from dealing with the symptoms of a chronic illness\, and the stress that goes along with it\, my friend gifted me a pass to her yoga studio. With resistance\, I went to class. It was a real “ah ha moment” for me. Seven years later\, I am still practicing consistently and have become a yoga instructor. My goal in teaching yoga is to introduce people to what has kept me healthy\, in the hopes they will uncover what works for them\, in their own way and own time. I am a mother and have been a classroom teacher for the past 16 years as well\, so I have a special interest in yoga for children\, parents\, and teachers. \nCertification: Vinyasa-200HR (Inlet Yoga\, Murrells Inlet\, SC) \nFavorite Posture: Standing Forward Fold \nHobbies: sharing laughs and conversation with family and friends\, yoga\, being outdoors\, reading\, traveling

SUMMARY:Community Read Book Discussion: "A Place Called Home" w/ CAPCO\, Cortland LGBTQ Center\, and Hillside
DESCRIPTION:Pick up a free copy of A Place Called Home: A Memoir\, by David Ambroz at Cortland Free Library\, then join us for this in-person discussion on Saturday\, April 29 with our community partners\, Cortland LGBTQ Center\, CAPCO\, and Hillside/Cortland County Foster Parent Training/Recruiting. \nAbout the Book: \nAs a child\, David Ambroz was raised homeless in New York City\, the home of Wall Street and more than 100\,000 homeless children. For David and his two siblings\, their mother’s diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia sets them in motion for a life of poverty\, violence and instability as they travel across New York and New England seeking shelter. For eleven years\, home for David means living in train stations\, subway cars\, 24-hour diners\, and wherever is safe and warm; bathing in public restrooms; and stealing food to quell his hunger. \nWhen he gets into foster care\, it feels like salvation\, but it soon proves to be just as unsafe for young people–more of his foster siblings are put on a prison pipeline than college-bound. Surmounting violence\, continued poverty and physical and emotional abuse at the hands of his caregivers\, David harnesses an inner grit to escape the inevitable outcome for kids like him. He takes shelter and finds hope on his own in libraries\, schools\, and in the occasional adult angel. Through hard work and unwavering resolve\, he is able to get into Vassar College\, the first significant step out from the yolk of poverty\, and later graduates UCLA School of Law. \nThis heart-wrenching and inspiring story about young people pulls back the curtain on homelessness and poverty in the lives of children and shines a pivotal light on generations of kids that have been systematically ignored and overlooked. A Place Called Home is both David’s powerful personal account through the lens of a child surviving it daily. And as the go-to child welfare advocate for the Obama administration and major U.S. companies\, A Place Called Home is a beckoning call to our national conscience to move from pity to action.
