SUMMARY:Cortland Community Pride Festival Workshops @ The Library
DESCRIPTION:The Cortland LGBTQ Center is holding Cortland Community Pride Festival in Courthouse Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. \nJoin us at the library for the following Pride Festival Workshops! \n  \nPeriodicals Room \n10:30-11:20 a.m.: Erin Vallely & Aster Parrott Self Care While Disabled and Queer: Erin and Aster will facilitate a conversation about ways to advocate for yourself\, build community\, and be a better ally for your disabled queer friends. There are countless ways to be queer –it’s an umbrella that covers anyone who’s not both cisgender and straight. Likewise\, there are countless ways to be disabled. Research from multiple sources tells us that disabilities are more common for queer people than for cis-het people\, and that queer disabled folks face unique challenges because of their intersecting identities. \nMeeting Room \n11-11:50am – Garry Haraveth\, The Science of Happiness: During this fun and engaging workshop\, you will learn what we think makes us happy but ultimately may not; what science-backed research says may make us a happier person; concrete practices to live a happier life! Gary is an educator and life coach/owner of Gay Life Journey. \n1-1:50pm – Ashley Dickson: Peer Services for Queer Youth and Young Adults (ASAP approved\, 1 hour continuing ed credit for CRPA). This presentation aims to explore how to engage with people in an LGBTQIA+ affirming way and how to correct non-affirming actions if/when they happen. You will learn how to interact and engage with LGBTQIA+ identifying youth and young adults in their substance use and/or mental health recovery journey; an overview of vocabulary used within the LGBTQIA+ community; the prevalence of LGBTQIA+ identifying people with substance use disorders and/or mental illness; supports that the LGBTQ+ community have within treatment settings; what providers can do to provide and improve affirming care. \n  \nPeriodicals Room \n2-2:50pm – Isabel Sterling: The Path to Publication. Isabel Sterling\, author of These Witches Don’t Burn\, This Coven Won’t Break\, and The Coldest Touch\, breaks down her path to publication–from small town reading enthusiast to traditionally published author with queer YA novels available in 4 languages worldwide! Presentation includes an author Q&A and book signing. Isabel Sterling is a master certified life coach\, foster mom\, and host of The Author Burnout Cure Podcast. An alumna of Purchase College and Syracuse University\, Isabel spent several years working in higher education and LGBTQ non-profits before leaving to write and coach full-time. Isabel lives with her family in Central New York.

SUMMARY:Movie Night: The Goonies
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a movie & snacks! \nThe Goonies is set in a coastal town in the Pacific Northwest\, where a slightly ramshackle neighborhood called the Goondocks is threatened with foreclosure and redevelopment by corporate types. Local kids\, motley outcasts known as “goonies”\, are cleaning out when they find a treasure map and clues to the legendary loot of a 17th century pirate\, “One-Eyed Willie.” With that kind of windfall\, the goonies could save their homes. Clues lead the kids beneath a closed-down restaurant\, the lair of a crime family of counterfeiters\, who keep Sloth (late football star John Matuszak)\, a super-strong son with a facial difference\, chained in the basement. Villains chase after the kids\, who must negotiate a number of deadly booby traps set centuries ago by One-Eyed Willie\, as they explore a maze of underground caverns and skeleton-strewn chambers. \nRated PG\, Common Sense Media suggests this movie is for 10+. Runtime: 114 minutes.  Registration is requested.\nOpen to ages 12 & up. Registration is required.

SUMMARY:Community Read Book Discussion: Disability Visibility with Access to Independence\, Racker\, CACTC\, and the Cortland County Mental Health Department
DESCRIPTION:Pick up a free copy of Disability Visibility: First-Person Stories from the 21st Century\, edited by Alice Wong at Cortland Free Library\, then join us for this in-person book discussion with our partners Access to Independence\, Racker\, Cortland Area Communities That Care (CACTC)\, and the Cortland County Mental Health Department. \nOther ways to read the book: \n\nAudiobook\neBook\nPlain-language summary by Sara Luterman (more about the plain-language version)\nLibrary of Congress’ Braille and Audio Reading Download program (downloadable talking book #DB99604 and Braille currently in process of being added)\n\n  \nAbout the Book: \nA groundbreaking collection of first-person writing on the joys and challenges of the modern disability experience\, Disability Visibility brings together the voices of activists\, authors\, lawyers\, politicians\, artists\, and everyday people whose daily lives are\, in the words of playwright Neil Marcus\, “an art . . . an ingenious way to live.” \nAccording to the last census\, one in five people in the United States lives with a disability. Some are visible\, some are hidden–but all are underrepresented in media and popular culture. Now\, just in time for the thirtieth anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act\, activist Alice Wong brings together an urgent\, galvanizing collection of personal essays by contemporary disabled writers. There is Harriet McBryde Johnson’s “Unspeakable Conversations\,” which describes her famous debate with Princeton philosopher Peter Singer over her own personhood. There is columnist s. e. smith’s celebratory review of a work of theater by disabled performers. There are original pieces by up-and-coming authors like Keah Brown and Haben Girma. There are blog posts\, manifestos\, eulogies\, and testimonies to Congress. \nTaken together\, this anthology gives a glimpse of the vast richness and complexity of the disabled experience\, highlighting the passions\, talents\, and everyday lives of this community. It invites readers to question their own assumptions and understandings. It celebrates and documents disability culture in the now. It looks to the future and past with hope and love. – Provided by publisher \n  \nAbout the Author: \n \nAlice Wong (she/her) is a disabled activist\, writer\, media maker\, and consultant.
